1975 Triumph Stag

If you were to look up a buyer’s guide for a Stag it would go into depth about all the things to look out for in a potential buy such as engine maintenance, drivetrain and suspension condition and interior niggles to look out for.

It’ll summarise by saying a bad example will let you down and cost a fortune but a good one will delight with its touring ability, comfort, soundtrack, and sophistication. We’re confident this car falls firmly in the latter camp so if you’ve come across this listing, your search has proved fruitful.

A big contributor to our claims is the wonderful history, clearly kept by true enthusiasts of the Stag which includes a handwritten notebook of the various exploits and owners’ history behind some of the car’s 9 different keepers with dates and mileage.

The current owner purchased the car several months ago and drove it 80 miles to his classic car storage facility. Where it’s sat until now! Prior to that the recent previous owners gave it a thorough recommission.

Since then, the car has been a delight and “starts on the button”, the vendor reports. It is only being sold due to the current owners other cars taking priority at present.

The car is believed to be all original with only some small remedial paintwork being carried out in 1990/1991. It does have a new mohair hood and frame as well as some new wheels, but the idea here has been to keep as much as possible true to the original car as it came out of the factory.

It’s Maple Brown if you’re wondering, the epitome of the 70s and a colour we think suits this stag down to the ground. Now if you were to strain your eyes hard enough and get within inches of the bodywork, you would find some minor marks here and there but for a car that is 47 years old and has few miles on the clock, it is in remarkable condition.

The body panels and panel gaps around the car are straight, tight and uniform and considering this car is believed to have all its original metalwork, it is even more impressive that the car is in such good condition.

Interestingly, the Stag comes with both the soft top and the hard top, a popular option from factory as the regulations at the time stated the Triumph had to have a B pillar roll bar to comply with safety measures. We previously mentioned that the Mohair hood and frame is new, but the hard top is in equally as good a condition as the exterior.

The tyres look to have plenty of tread left whilst the wheels themselves are in near new condition, which is unsurprising as they are near new. Along with the wheels and tyres, the brightwork and badges around the car are again in great condition, there is some very minor pitting in some of the chrome but far less than you would expect for the age of the car.

The same narrative continues into the interior, the upholstery is in great condition, and you’d be forgiven for thinking it was all recently installed after an expensive restoration, but it is reported to be original and the factory spec. There are no rips, tears, scuffs or stains as far as we can see on the seats and the rears are in just as good a condition as the fronts.

The carpets and headlining on the hard top are in good condition too, the carpets have protective over mats in the front and back which means they haven’t worn unevenly. Underneath the carpets is solid too from what was visible and captured in the photo gallery which we encourage you to take a look through.

The wooden dash is in good nick too, the dials are all reported to be working and are in very good condition. Working as intended also is the power steering and the electric windows. The popular auto box with overdrive is reportedly a pleasure to drive with and its centre console housing is in good condition with just a small lacquer peel as seen in the gallery.

The boot space in the Stag is well kept and tidy and the metal work underneath stands up well to inspection. There is also the tool kit and the jack in the boot too.

The engine bay shapes up very well too, that original V8 looking nicely at home tucked up under the Stag’s sleek bonnet lines. The owner has had the cooling system overhauled and recommissioned after it had been sat and reports that the car does not overheat after a delightful experience sat in motorway traffic in the recent warm days we have been treated with. The owner also reports the carbs have been overhauled and as such the car eagerly fires up on the button reliably.

Remarkably the underside of the Stag is in good condition visually and the owner reports its complimented by every mechanic and technician that ventures underneath the car. The stag has clearly been kept in dry conditions for much of its life and the underseal has not seen the barrage of stones chipping it away from 47 years of hard use.

Along with the handwritten notebook documenting the history of the car, the Stag also comes with the original leather owner’s manual folder including the original owners’ manuals.

The history was one of the main reasons the current owner was taken with the car and indeed a car that has this level of documentation is likely to be a good prospect. A fully stamped service book, a collection of period tax discs, owner’s club paraphernalia and more invoices than you can shake a stick at, this Stag has near enough its entire history mapped out.
