Overview

This beautifully presented example of the 1999 Mercedes G500 LWB Elegance is particularly special, as it is believed to be one of just 51 UK models. The fact that it comes with an excellent specification and a well-documented service history only adds to its appeal. Given its iconic design and legendary off-road capabilities, a well-maintained example like this is sure to attract collectors and enthusiasts alike.

Recent mechanical and cosmetic work further enhances its desirability, ensuring the vehicle not only looks stunning but also performs at its best. With no expense spared on its upkeep, this G500 has been carefully preserved to a high standard, making it a standout example of this sought-after model. If you are considering it, a detailed review of the service records in our documents section will provide further insight into the meticulous care it has received.

Exterior

Walking around this Mercedes icon, you would never guess that the G500 Elegance dates back to 1999. The bodywork is in excellent condition, with certain areas having been addressed to maintain its fresh appearance. Finished in its original colour of Onyx Grey Metallic, the G-Class retains a modern and commanding presence even today.

At the front, the colour-coded bumper, grille, and headlight surrounds are all in excellent condition, with only a few minor stone chips—nothing excessive. The headlights, fog lights, and clear wing-mounted indicators are all in good order.

Moving to the sides, the door shut gaps are uniform and well-aligned. The wheel arch extensions and sill steps are in good condition, free from scuffs, splits, or cracks. The door mouldings are straight, and all windows appear free from excessive scratches. The rear half of the G500 features tinted windows for added security and privacy.

At the rear, the tailgate fits as expected, with the spare wheel mounted securely and its cover intact. The lights are in good condition with no splits or cracks, and a tow bar is fitted.

The vehicle sits on a set of later-style five-spoke alloy wheels, which are in excellent condition with no visible damage. A matching set of Continental tyres is fitted, each with a good amount of tread remaining.

Interior

Inside, the G500 combines rugged capability with plush luxury. The grey ruffled leather seats are in excellent condition, showing minimal signs of wear on both the front and rear seats. All four door cards are also finished in ruffled leather and are free from damage.

The dashboard is well-preserved and features Burr Walnut veneer trim, which remains in excellent condition. The instruments function correctly, with the odometer displaying a reading of 97,969 miles. The switchgear and heater controls show no excessive wear, and all lettering remains intact.

A modern Pioneer DAB head unit has been fitted, featuring a flip-out screen and smartphone connectivity, including satellite navigation.

The flooring throughout is in excellent condition, as is the headlining. Inside the boot, two drop-down bench seats match the interior trim and remain in good order.

Mechanical

Under the bonnet, the well-presented engine bay houses the fantastic 5.0-litre V8 powerhouse. The engine starts with the characteristic V8 growl before settling into a smooth idle, barely audible thanks to its refined engineering.

No issues have been reported with the vehicle's running, and no warning lights were present when the G500 was photographed.

The automatic transmission shifts smoothly, operating exactly as expected, while the front, centre, and rear differential lock switches function correctly.

With disc brakes on each corner, the weighty G500 stops confidently in a straight line, delivering a reassuring braking feel.

The underside of the vehicle is in very good condition, showing minimal signs of surface corrosion on suspension components. This suggests the G500 has led a relatively sheltered life when it comes to off-road adventures.

History

The service history of this G500 is excellent, with a total of 12 service stamps in the booklet, supplemented by additional invoices detailing further maintenance.

One notable invoice covers work carried out on 30th May 2021, when the timing chain and tensioners were replaced. The most recent service was completed on 23rd April 2024 at 94,356 miles. The majority of the invoices date back to 2023, when the G500 received extensive attention and care.

The vehicle has a current MOT, valid until 10th February 2026.

Summary

Sophisticated yet unapologetically rugged, the 1999 Mercedes G500 Elegance combines luxury with serious off-road capability. With its boxy, tank-like stance and a burly 5.0-litre V8 under the bonnet, this old-school G-Wagen is equally at home conquering mountain trails or arriving in style at a black-tie event. It offers the best of both worlds, making you feel like royalty with a rebellious streak.

A beautifully well-presented and highly desirable Elegance model, we estimate this example will fetch in the region of £30,000–£35,000.
