Fraser's review

Fraser Jackson - Consignment Specialist Message Fraser

“ An X5 40i MSport ticks most of the automotive boxes you’re ever likely to want. ”

Is it well-appointed, luxurious and a fine place to spend some quality time?

Background

Believe it not, the BMW X5 first left its mahoosive footprint on some tarmac in 1999.

We say tarmac because, as we all know, no luxury ‘off-roader’ would recognise mud, water, ice or anything with a gradient, even if you sent it off for a weekend with the famous born-again Baptist, woggle-wearer and gonad gourmet, Bear Grylls.

Yes, these Bavarian behemoths have been around for over a quarter of a century.

In the intervening years, naturally, things have evolved, developed and moved on.

So much so, in fact, that the twin-turbocharged inline-6 engine under the bonnet of the X5 40i has enough push and twist about it to propel the big boxy bruiser to 60mph in a frankly astonishing 4.8 seconds.

By some extraordinary coincidence, we just happen to have a fine 2021 example of the breed with us at our Oxfordshire HQ at this very moment.

Overview

This fine-looking machine is a very high specification example and comes with all manner of additional, optional, bonus, don’t-ask-how-much extras.

If we had a spec sheet in front of us, we’d tell you exactly what it has.

Well, we don’t have one of those but you really should believe us when we tell you that its first owner didn’t miss many chances to tick all the boxes on the options list.

We’ve seen fewer bells and whistles at a Morris dancing convention.

Anyway.

It is minty fresh and squeaky clean in most respects, and not least because it has just a paltry 19,437 miles indicated on the digital odometer.

Exterior

The bodywork is really very good and there are no dinks, dents or creases of consequence anywhere that we can see.

The panel gaps and shut-lines are crisp and exact, and the doors close with plenty of weight and precision.

In the sunshine, the dark grey metallic finish really pops and dazzles.

There is, however, an issue with the paintwork on the front passenger door and on the wing ahead of it.

The paint looks to have been buffed back to a matt finish in places, perhaps in preparation for, or as a consequence of, some sort of previous, yet-to-be-finished repair job. In other places there are a couple of paint runs in evidence.

We don’t know where, how, when or why and neither does the vendor – whatever the story is, it unfolded before he took ownership of the vehicle in November 2023.

The imposing 21” wheels are in fine fettle and show off their ‘M’-branded blue callipers to optimum effect.

The matching Pirelli P-Zero tyres appear to have a few miles of motoring left in them,

The lights, lenses and all other exterior fixtures and fittings look like the rest of it, virtually showroom-fresh, although the finish on the nearside ‘M’ badge is strangely rough and textured.

Interior

The fulsomely ticked options list continues unabated on the inside, where everything is spec’d to the max and there’s a super-abundance of tech and gizmos wherever you rest your gaze.

The pale ivory leather upholstery, featuring quilted panels, is untroubled by either use or the passage of time and is no doubt bristling with all sorts of heating, cooling and memory functionality.

We imagine there’s a button somewhere that prompts the seats to give you a quick rub down with a damp flannel, shine your shoes and iron your trousers.

Talking of seats, this car comes with seven of them, with the last two lying flat in the luggage compartment until such time as you require them to spring into life. A genuinely useful feature, we’re sure you’ll concur.

The (heated, obviously) steering wheel, gear-selector, handbrake and other controls are beyond criticism, as is the dashboard’s impressive array of knobs, buttons, switches, and screens playing host to various digital instruments and dials.

There is, of course, a Top Gun-style heads-up display. There’s also a plumbed-in BMW dash-cam, which is pretty cool, to be fair.

The headlining, carpets and mats are in uniformly irreproachable condition.

As far as we’re aware, all electrical items do what they’re supposed to do.

Mechanical

Obviously, there’s not much to be learned from peering into the engine bay of a modern car.

That said, what we can see appears to be clean, dry and in its right and proper place.

The undersides seem to be particularly well preserved, and everything looks to have a reassuring amount of structural integrity.

Nothing has given us any reason to tut, frown or shake our heads.

History

As it stands, this car has less history than Clint Eastwood in any of the countless films where he turns up wearing a poncho and chewing a cheroot at some desperate, fly-blown town inhabited by terrified peasants.

If or when we get more info, we’ll let you know.

What it does have, however, is an electronic record of its service history, which is stored on the car’s computer.

By this witchcraft we are able to tell you that it was first checked by BMW technicians on 3.6.21, when it had just 6 miles under its belt.

It was serviced by BMW on 18.1.23, with the mileage at 8,796.

The computer tells us that it is due for its next service in June 2025, or when it has reached 21,000 miles.

It has an MoT – with no advisories whatsoever – that’s valid until 25th November 2025.

The car comes with a recent, clear HPI report, a V5C and full sets of keys.

Summary

Your author is not alone in thinking that an X5 40i MSport ticks most of the automotive boxes you’re likely to want to tick.

Can you fit a wardrobe, a small drum kit and some dogs in the back of it?

Yes.

Is it well-appointed, luxurious and a fine place to spend some quality time?

Yes.

Will it grip hold of tarmac, mud, snow and ice like your life depends upon it?

Probably.

It is fast enough to embarrass a whole host of vehicles that wear their pretensions to sporting status rather less lightly.

Undoubtedly.

However you look at it, it’s a whole lot of car.
